2013 Trek Speed Concept 7.8

TTs are one of the ultimate tests. The wind conspires against you, the sun bakes you and the never-yielding clock just keeps ticking away. Trek's Speed Concept 7.8 is your only friend in this harsh world. This full-carbon secret weapon uses unique Kammtail shapes that actually make you faster, even in cross winds. Of course Trek tuned the carbon so it's exceedingly stiff where you need it to be and compliant where you want it for comfort. Then they hid the rear brake, cables, quick releases and even the computer sensor from the wind. Plus, the specs are all aero, all the time, with slippery Aura 5 wheels, carbon aero bars and extensions, and a carbon seatpost. Then they top it off with a 20-speed SRAM Force drivetrain with TT shifters. You can only count on yourself out on the course, and your Speed Concept.

Rode it 3 times to get used to the new feel then rode a 24 mile loop I have done for years, the new bike took 6 minutes of my previous best. In Triathlons I am blowing past people like never before. So excited about the bike this might be my first year ever to ride year round (buying warm clothes soon)

    Comments:

Having got into triathlons I decided to throw caution to the wind and upgraded my road bike for a time trial specific bike, the Trek 7.8 Speed Concept. I've been looking at this bike for a while and not only does it look a great bike on the Trek website actually seeing the bike itself it is a beautiful thing. To test it out I took it straight out on a 25 mile route that I like to train over and I could instantly feel the difference in terms of the responsiveness of the bike and the power and speed I was generating. It was a windy day but I still easily took 5 minutes off my best time and I definitely feel there is further improvement there as I get more used to the bike. The Trek SC 7.8 is a superb bike and I can't wait to get out and race on it. The draft and speed boxes are great additions.

    Comments:

Great bike for serious athletes. I mainly use this in ITT's and TTT's. The best thing I like about this is I feel comfortable pushing some big watts which means I can push out higher watts for longer periods. Extremely aero, quiet and responsive. Predictively corners well and responsive when dropping the hammer. Speed and draft boxes are excellent options. Rear brake can be finicky but use with barrel adjuster inline and won't have to fiddle when changing to wider wheels. The handlebar hardware is a bit overkill but conversion kits are available. Very, very happy with this rig.

    Comments:

I use my 2012 Trek Speed Concept 7.8 for racing and training. The bike is flat out FAST! Talk about a huge speed increase from a road bike to this bike. In the picture are my training wheels (not included), but I love the Bontrager Aura wheels that ARE included with the bike. They are fast, smooth, and comfortable. The main reason why I got this bike is because of the great value it offers. Sram Force + Bontrager Aura 5 Wheels + SC Frame + Bontrager Aero Base bar and Extensions = Lighting Speed Bike. Look out Lance! I'll see you in Kona! ;) Not so great: The rear brake. I know it is faster being tucked underneath the bike, but it is a real hassle to adjust while changing out wheelsets. Should this prevent you from getting the bike? Nope, I'd buy this bike again, and again, and again. However, it is the reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars, instead of 5 out of 5.
